Our Training: The Artesia Police Department provides four different areas of training on a consistent basis.  The first area is “Initial” training, which is aimed for all of our new officers to get acclimated with the department, our public safety partners/agencies, onboarding training, any Academy training (full certification or certification by waiver), Field Officer Training (FTO), and any other specialized that is needed to get the officer adapted to the department, the city, and the people.

The next area is “Biennium” training, which consists of certified officers completing the state required training that happens every two years to keep their certification.   Our department provides every officer an online service to obtain most of the required trainings.  Classes that are mandated to be in-person, would be taught by our certified instructors or instructors brought outside of agency.

The next area is “Safety” training, which consists of a few safety courses that are required by the City of Artesia or the State of New Mexico on a yearly or multi-year basis.   Some examples of these courses would be Bleeding Control, Bloodborne Pathogens, Defensive Driving, Sexual Harassment, and CPR/First Aid.

The final area is “Advanced” training.  Our department is dedicated to providing advanced training to enhance your knowledge and skills for your position or for a position that you can possibly attain in the future. Some examples of these types of courses would be anything outside the Initial, Biennium, and Safety training, which includes but not limited to Interview Techniques, Active Shooter Response, Street Crimes/Officer Survival, RADAR/LIDAR, Taser X10, Drug Interdiction, Leadership, Simulation/Reality Based Training and many more!
