At the latest City Council meeting, Adalyn Troost spoke to the council about the upcoming Walk for a Brighter Day event that will take place during Balloons and Tunes. The event is on Nov. 8th at 7:30 AM. The goal of the event is to build community and raise awareness for mental health and suicide prevention.

After that, our IT department announced they will be doing maintenance on the city’s network next week. This work will take multiple days and city services will be impacted during this time.

Next, our Infrastructure director announced that crews have begun phase 3 of the 26th street project. Phase 2 was completed on schedule and 26th is now open from Grand to Washington. Phase 3 will work on 26th from Washington to Mann.

After that, the council passed our election resolution. The resolution says that the city election will take place March 3, 2026. Positions that will be voted on include the mayor, and 4 council seats. Anyone interested in running must submit a candidate packet to the city clerk on January 6th. This election is separate from the county elections happening this November.

Then the Council gave approval for the Artesia Arts Council to host Balloons, Bands, and Brews November 8th. Balloons and Tunes will be held November 7-9

Next, the council approved an agreement between the City and AMC to accept the donation of the Landsun Theater. Originally, the theater was going to be purchased with grant money from Artesia Mainstreet. Those plans have changed, and the theater will now be donated to the city instead. The money from MainStreet as well as additional money from the state will be used for repairs to the theater.

Finally, the council voted to hire Hayley Klein as Artesia’s City Administrator. This is a new position that will coordinate with staff, councilors and partners to advance the goals of the city.
