For a written recap, read below:

At the latest City Council meeting they started by reminding everyone of the upcoming public hearings on November 10th. One of the items discussed will be a variance request regarding two mobile homes. The second item will discuss the housing development at the site of the old armory building. If you have any opinions on the development, we invite you to come to the November 10th meeting and make your voice heard.

After that, our recreation committee reported that our first flag football season is coming to an end. 261 kids participated this year, and the council thanked everyone involved for their work. The committee also noted that signups for basketball are happening now.

Next the council voted to accept a donation to our police department from Devon Energy. The donation is for $10,000 and will go towards new vests for our officers. Devon Energy has been a longtime supporter of our police department. The mayor said that he is grateful for the way that industries in Artesia continually support our community.

Then the council voted to approve the list of projects to submit for state funding. Putting these projects on our Infrastructure Capital Improvement Plan makes them eligible to receive the funding when state legislators meet later this year.

The top 5 projects on the list are a new rescue engine for the fire department, the remodel of city hall, a self-contained breathing apparatus for the fire department, cardiac monitors for the fire department, and the design phase of a future roadwork project.

In closing, Mayor Henry recognized local students. He said that athletics have been doing well across the board this year. He also mentioned we've had good showings from our band and FFA students. We're proud of the effort that our students put in, and the way that they represent Artesia.

This has been your city council recap. Please note that because the second Tuesday of November will fall on Veterans Day this year, our next meeting will instead be held Monday, November 10th. We hope you can join us for the meeting.
