At our latest City Council meeting, the Budget and Finance Committee reported that they had discussions on how the City could assist with events in town during the National Championship Air Races. The Council wants to make sure Artesia puts its best foot forward when tens of thousands of people come to the area for the races. The National Championship Air Races will be held in Roswell September 10th-14th.
Next the police reported that they have arrested 6 subjects in connection to recent reports of people breaking into cars. The police also noted that the majority of these instances were cases where cars were left unlocked. The Artesia Police would like to remind everyone to lock their car.
After that, our infrastructure department reported that there was electrical damage at one of the wells in town. There was no interruption to water service in town thanks to other city tanks that they were able to draw from. Repairs are going on now. The infrastructure department would like to thank the water department workers and electricians who are fixing this issue.
Then our infrastructure department also reported that work has begun on the Grand Street water line project. This is a multi-phase project that will go from 13th-26th. Originally this project was scheduled to happen later, however, recent leaks to the water line have been impacting an increasing number of homes in the area and needed to be addressed now. The intent is to have the work near the Bulldog Bowl be done before football season rolls around.
Finally, the City approved a grant agreement for the Rec Center. The grant is worth $810,000 and will go towards turning the existing rec center into a community center in the future. It’s important to note that this does not change any plans for the future Rec Center that is currently being built. This will help the existing rec center continue to operate as a useful public space after the new rec center is built.
We'd like to invite everyone to join us for our next City Council Meeting March 25th at City Hall.
